As this look was quite much adored by all of you, I wore it to my admission for Fashion Design at ArtEZ Arnhem, a Dutch Academy of Arts. Unluckily I didn’t get through the admission, as they thought I was too young and not ’developed’ enough. I couldn’t prove otherwise, cause their first look at my work determined the rest. Too bad they worked that way.

It was really bad they only looked at the number of my age. “17 in a month? So you’re only 16 right now?”. You know, in that way. They didn’t even think of me being possibly more mature than others of my age. I lost my mother at the age of 13, the time you actually really start developing, and then suddenly you are alone, wihout a mother supporting you. Everything I do, I do it on my own, I’m so independant, but they only see the number 16.

First I got quite emotional, but after an hour I just thought “So what, life goes on and I only get better by the day”. I didn’t post last night because I just wanted to watch television and have nothing to do with fashion for one night.

Edit, 22:02: There are only 44 places by the way, 2 classes in total. So out of the 800 applies, there isn’t a big chance you get in.

uh, it’s hard if you get judged by the aspect of your age.
i love the way you dress and the creativity you put into your outfits- chin up, you’ll make it!

Pardon?! But don’t give it up girl!

That is too bad, but you will make it someday!! As you said, life goes on and you will have so many more opportunities! *hugs*

Sorry to hear you didn’t get in, but there’s obviously better things waiting =)
I’ve been finding things hard lately with exams etc so I know how you feel, but it will get better.

  7. Hailey says:

I am really sorry to hear about that. It will all come, you are so talented. And yes, definitely mature beyond your years.

  8. Ali says:

Hey, the great thing about being 16 is that you have plenty of years to apply again! I am doing fashion design at university now. my best advice is that if you are rejected, spend a year really focusing on building up some skills and experience. get work experience at a studio, volunteer at fashion parades, do some short courses on fashion, illustration, illustration, sewing, patternmaking etc. really work on prducing a great portfolio. Find out about any events the school is having and go to every single one and mingle, mingle, mingle! Then re-apply the next year and show them how much you’ve done since they last saw you and they’ll see how committed you are! if you’re still too young, do it all over again. you’ll end up eventually starting the course with so much more experience and skills than any of the other students, and we’ll be seeing your designs in stores in no time! good luck and stay focused!

  9. Renée Sturme says:

And thanks again for your support!

    @Ali: I will, I will ;)
I do still have1 or 2 admissions to come, they won’t be as hard as ArtEZ, but otherwise I will definately focus EVEN MORE on getting in next year.

It’s a shame they couldn’t see your maturity and determination because of a number, but like others said don’t give up and keep working, it’ll happen!

  13. Evelien says:

  14. selina says:

stuff them, they just missed out big time with you! you will rise higher and they will eat their words, and at least i guess it would be harder if you were older and they didn’t think you were good enough, like most of the other people?

  15. Caroline says:

darling, they don’t know what they’re missing. I, too, am young (17) and starting fashion school next semester. They didn’t really know how to react, but they took me because of my recommendation letters. It just means there is something better out there for you.

  16. susie_bubble says:

You will dust yourself and try again because age is one of those stupid barriers that people use as a black and white barometer….. the good thing is, that it isn’t any reflection on your work…. that would be a tougher challenge to overcome….

  17. Rebecca says:

    Lieve schat!
    Dikke kus Rebecca

you are really young and thats a good thing. you have so many years to keep applying!

  21. Lana says:

    xoxo
